All About Flamingos
Flamingos are famous for their vibrant pink feathers, long legs, and distinctive hooked beaks. They are found in various parts of the world, often wading in shallow lakes, lagoons, and mangrove swamps.
Why are they pink?
The pink or reddish color of a flamingo’s feathers comes from carotenoid pigments in their diet, primarily from brine shrimp and blue-green algae. Without these pigments, flamingos would be mostly greyish-white.
Unique Feeding Habits
Flamingos have a unique way of feeding. They turn their heads upside down in the water and use their specialized beaks to filter out mud and silt, trapping shrimp and algae to eat.
Social Birds
These birds are highly social and live in large colonies that can contain thousands of individuals. This helps protect them from predators and aids in finding mates.
